Your car starts, the dashboard settles down and you pull away. Then a red battery-shaped light stays on—or appears halfway through the school run.
It’s easy to assume the car battery is at fault. In many cases, though, that battery warning light is telling you the charging system isn’t working properly. The alternator, which acts as a generator, may no longer be replacing the electrical energy your car uses.
That matters because a car can continue running for a short time on battery power alone, but it won’t run indefinitely. Once that stored charge is gone, the engine can cut out and may not restart.
The alternator is a key part of your car charging system. When the engine is running, it generates electricity for systems such as the lights, heater fan, infotainment, demisters and engine management electronics, as well as other electrical components and accessories like the radio and power windows.
It also recharges the 12-volt car battery after starting. The battery provides the initial burst of power needed to start the engine; the alternator then keeps the electrical system supplied while you drive.
In modern cars—including Suzuki Swift, Vitara and S-Cross models—electrical demand can be substantial. Safety sensors, control modules, heated screens, lights and cabin technology all depend on a stable supply.
The alternator is located near the front of the engine and is driven by the crankshaft via a belt. It converts mechanical energy from the engine into electrical power.
Inside the alternator, the rotor spins inside the stator, producing an alternating current (AC). However, your car’s electronics require direct current (DC), so a rectifier (diode) converts the AC to DC.
A voltage regulator controls the output, maintaining a steady electrical current—usually between 13.8 and 14.4 volts—to protect the vehicle's electrical system and ensure enough power for all electrical components.
Alternators don’t always fail without warning. The signs can begin intermittently, particularly when the engine is cold or the car is under a heavy electrical load.
The red battery symbol should normally illuminate when you switch on the ignition and go out after the engine starts.
If it remains on, comes on while driving or flickers, there may be a fault with the alternator, drive belt, wiring, voltage regulator or another part of the charging circuit. It doesn’t automatically mean the battery itself needs replacing.
Lights that dim at idle, brighten when you accelerate or pulse noticeably can point to unstable charging voltage.
You may notice this more easily on a dark South Dublin commute or during wet Irish weather, when the headlights, wipers, heater and rear demister are all working together.
A failing alternator can cause slow electric windows taking longer than usual to operate, a weak heater fan, an unresponsive infotainment screen or several warning messages appearing together.
Modern vehicles can display seemingly unrelated alerts when system voltage drops. Proper testing is important before any parts are replaced.
If the alternator hasn’t been charging, the battery may no longer have enough energy to turn the engine over, causing difficulty starting.
A jump-start might get the car running, but it won’t repair the underlying fault. If the alternator output is low or absent, the car may stop again shortly afterwards.
Unusual noises from the front of the engine can be linked to alternator bearings, the auxiliary belt or its tensioner.
A loose or damaged belt may also prevent the alternator from charging correctly. On some engines, belt-related problems can affect other components, so the noise shouldn’t be ignored.
A burning-rubber or hot-wiring smell can indicate a slipping belt, overheated alternator or damaged electrical connection.
Switch off safely and arrange assistance. Continuing to drive could cause further damage.
Testing the alternator involves checking voltage output with a multimeter. A healthy battery voltage reads about 12.6 volts when the engine is off. When running, the alternator should provide between 13.8 and 14.4 volts.
Visual inspection of the serpentine belt and electrical connections can help identify issues. Faulty internal components like the rotor, stator, rectifier, or voltage regulator can cause alternator problems.
When alternator output stops, the battery temporarily becomes the car’s only electrical source.
At first, the vehicle may feel usual and normal. As voltage falls, you may see warning lights, reduced assistance from electrical systems, misfiring or erratic dashboard behaviour. Eventually, the engine management and fuel systems can no longer operate and the engine stops.
How long the car continues depends on several factors including battery condition, vehicle design, and the number of electrical systems and other components in use. There’s no dependable “safe distance” to drive.
In our experience, drivers can be caught out because the car still seems fine when the warning first appears. A short journey through Terenure traffic can quickly become a break down once lights, wipers and demisters add to the electrical load.
Treat a red battery warning light as urgent.
If it appears while you’re driving, avoid switching off the engine until you’re in a safe place, as the car may not restart. Turn off non-essential electrical loads such as heated seats, phone chargers and the radio—but keep anything needed for safety, including lights and wipers, operating.
Move to a safe location and contact a garage or breakdown service. If the steering becomes unusually heavy, the temperature warning appears, you smell burning or the car begins to lose power, stop as soon as it’s safe and switch off.
Don’t disconnect a battery terminal while the engine is running to “test” the alternator. That old shortcut can create a voltage surge and damage modern vehicle electronics.
The symptoms can overlap, but the faults are different.
A worn battery often causes slow cranking or difficulty starting, especially after the car has been parked. A charging-system fault is more likely to bring on the battery light while the engine is running or cause electrical issues to worsen as you drive.
We often see a flat battery replaced before the charging system has been tested. If a faulty alternator caused the battery to discharge, fitting a new battery alone may only provide a temporary fix.
A workshop should test battery condition, alternator output and voltage under load. It should also inspect the auxiliary belt, tensioner, wiring, earth connections and fault codes. That diagnosis helps determine the cause and avoid unnecessary parts and repeat breakdowns.
An alternator replacement generally involves isolating the battery, removing the drive belt and electrical connections, replacing the unit and checking belt condition and tension.
The technician should then confirm the charging rate and ensure the battery can accept and retain charge. A deeply discharged or ageing battery may need to be charged separately or replaced as part of the repair.
Price and labour time vary by manufacturer, model, engine and access. Some cars use smart-charging systems or stop-start technology, so the correct specification and diagnostic procedure matter.

The NCT isn’t a substitute for diagnosis or preventative maintenance. A car may develop a charging fault between tests, and waiting for the next NCT can leave you stranded long before the test date arrives.
If you’re considering an imported used car, remember that registration and mechanical condition are separate issues. Revenue explains that VRT is generally payable when a vehicle is registered in the State; it doesn’t confirm the health of the battery, alternator or charging system.
Check the current Revenue VRT guidance and arrange an independent mechanical inspection before buying.
For any used car, look for prompt starting, a battery light that goes out after the engine fires, consistent lighting and documented maintenance. Premium, well-prepared stock should be inspected carefully before it reaches the forecourt.
Alternator replacement is often a sensible repair, particularly when the rest of the car is in good condition. A proper diagnosis should come before any decision.
