What Do I Need to Bring?

Once the test is complete, the tester will communicate one of four possible outcomes:

NCT Results

Dangerous Fault: The vehicle poses a direct or immediate risk to road safety. It is illegal to drive with dangerous defects, and penalty points may be applied if caught by Gardaí. A warning sticker will be placed on your vehicle, and you must arrange for it to be towed to a garage for repairs. This is the automotive equivalent of a "do not enter" sign — heed it!

Major Fault: Your vehicle has failed the NCT due to significant defects. Repairs are necessary before you can pass. Approximately 50% of vehicles fail at this stage, highlighting the importance of pre-test servicing. Don't worry; it's not the end of the road — just a pit stop.

Minor Fault: Your vehicle has passed but has minor issues such as faulty windscreen wipers, indicator bulbs, or other minor visual items. You must fix these faults and return for a re-test within 30 days at any test centre. If the re-test requires computer testing, you will need to book a new appointment and pay the re-test fee. What to Do If You Have Failed

Lost or Missing Certificates

An up-to-date NCT certificate must be displayed alongside your vehicle’s tax and insurance on the windscreen. Failure to do so can result in fines and penalty points. If you lose your NCT certificate, you can apply for a replacement by obtaining an RF 134 form signed and stamped by your local Garda station.

Electric Cars and NCT

All electric and hybrid vehicles are subject to the NCT and must display a valid NCT certificate, just like traditional motor vehicles. This ensures that environmental protection and road safety standards are maintained across all vehicle types — even the quiet ones.

Exemptions

Vehicles with first registration before January 1, 1980, or those over 40 years old, are exempt from the NCT. Cars aged between 30 and 39 years not used for commercial purposes require testing every two years. So if your car is a classic, congratulations — you’re officially vintage and can skip the test!

So, How Can You Prepare for a Successful NCT Test?

✅   Address any dashboard warning lights before the test to avoid failure due to mechanical faults. Because a flashing light on your dash is not a disco invitation.

✅   Clear out your boot to allow easy inspection of your spare wheel. No one wants to play hide and seek with your emergency tyre.

✅   Remove wheel hubcaps before your appointment to save time and prevent loss. Hubcaps are sneaky little things that love to disappear.

✅   Inspect tyre tread depth to ensure it exceeds the minimum legal requirement of 1.6mm. Rotate the wheel fully left and right to get a clear view of the tyre surface. Bald tyres aren’t just a fashion faux pas — they’re a fail.

✅   Test all lights, including dipped and full beam headlights, indicators, brake lights, and fog lights. Replace any dim or faulty bulbs before your test. It’s better to be bright and safe than dim and doomed.

✅   Check fluid levels, including screen wash, engine oil, coolant, and steering fluid. If unsure how to do this, visit a local garage to avoid using incorrect fluids that might cause damage. Because your car is not a chemistry experiment.

✅   Buckle all seatbelts to check for fraying or malfunctioning clips. Seatbelts are tested during the inspection and should be left buckled. Think of it as giving your seatbelts a little pre-test hug.

✅   Clean your vehicle inside and out thoroughly. Remove all personal belongings from cup holders, foot wells, and under seats. A clean car makes the inspection easier and more pleasant for testers — and who wants to work on a car that looks like it survived a mud festival?
