If you’ve been keeping an eye on electric cars lately, you’ve probably heard talk of Suzuki’s first-ever EV — the Suzuki eVX Electric SUV. It’s the next big step for the brand that’s already won over Irish drivers with the Vitara, Swift, and S-Cross.
But what’s the story behind it? How will it fit into Irish roads, Revenue rules, and our famously unpredictable weather? At Gerry Caffrey Motors, we’ve been following the eVX’s journey closely — and here’s everything you need to know.
The eVX first appeared as a Suzuki EVX concept in 2023, previewing Suzuki’s move into full electrification. It was prominently presented at the Japan Mobility Show in October, showcasing the company's vision for a fully electric car that combines Suzuki’s rugged DNA with modern electric vehicle (BEV) technology. The eVX is expected to evolve into the Suzuki e Vitara, set to launch in Europe and India around spring next year (2025).
Suzuki’s goal is simple: create an electric SUV that keeps the rugged practicality of the Vitara, while adding the zero-emission smoothness that Dublin commuters and long-distance Irish drivers are demanding.
Measuring approximately 4,300mm in length, 1,800mm in width, and 1,600mm in height, the eVX is the same length as a production Suzuki S-Cross and slightly taller than the Vitara. This compact size makes it ideal for city driving and parking, while still offering ample interior space.
The eVX is built on Suzuki’s newly developed BEV platform, which is jointly developed with Toyota and Daihatsu, leveraging advanced electric vehicle technology and ensuring excellent performance and fuel efficiency (in terms of electric energy consumption). The platform supports both single- and dual-motor setups, with electronically controlled 4x4 technology for off-road capability reminiscent of Suzuki’s famed Jimny.
Inside, the eVX features a futuristic cabin with a large floating dual-screen setup that combines the instrument cluster and infotainment system into one seamless display. It also includes advanced driver aids such as a driver monitoring system and a yoke-style steering wheel with touch-sensitive controls, reflecting Suzuki’s commitment to excellence in both safety and user experience.
Suzuki claims the eVX will offer a range of up to 500 km under ideal conditions (Indian MIDC standard), with realistic range on Irish roads estimated around 350–400 km due to weather and terrain. The battery capacity is expected to be around 60 kWh, supporting fast AC and DC charging options.
The electric 4x4 system, known as AllGrip-e, uses dual motors to provide smooth power delivery and traction control, enhancing Suzuki’s reputation for off-road prowess in a BEV format.
Suzuki’s entry into the electric vehicle market is part of a broader strategy to sell more sustainable cars worldwide. The company showcased the eVX alongside other concepts like the eWX kei car and the e EVERY mini-commercial van at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo, highlighting its multi-pathway approach to electrification.
The e EVERY van, jointly developed with Daihatsu and Toyota, features a range of 200 km and can supply power back to the grid in emergencies, reflecting Suzuki’s innovative thinking beyond passenger vehicles.
The Suzuki eVX is expected to go into production in early 2025, with the official sale planned for later that year in Japan, India, Europe, and other key markets. Suzuki aims to integrate the eVX into its lineup alongside the popular Vitara, Swift, and S-Cross models, providing customers with a full range of electrified options.
In terms of dimensions and segment, the eVX will compete with electric SUVs like the Hyundai Kona Electric, Peugeot e-2008, and Renault Megane E-Tech Electric. Its combination of compact size, electric 4x4 technology, and Suzuki’s rugged reputation sets it apart in the growing EV market.
Suzuki’s reputation for building practical, reliable vehicles is a strong foundation for its electric future. The eVX concept suggests that Suzuki is committed to maintaining its core values while embracing new technology and innovation.
The company also continues to explore hydrogen engines and other alternative mobility solutions, signaling a comprehensive approach to carbon neutrality.
The Suzuki eVX Electric SUV represents the beginning of a new era for the brand and its customers worldwide. With its blend of advanced electric technology, practical design, and Suzuki’s off-road heritage, the eVX is poised to be a standout in the electric SUV market.
Whether you’re considering a switch to a fully electric vehicle or looking for a reliable SUV with excellent range and features, the eVX is definitely worth watching as it approaches its launch next year.
